Quick facts: An active volcano in central Java, Indonesia, it erupts on average every two to three years, affecting surrounding villages and farmland. With an elevation of 2,930 meters, it is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia.
Highlights: Volcanic eruptions create spectacular volcanic clouds and lava flows. At night, the glowing red lava resembles the Earth's furnace. The small villages at the volcano's base, though close, benefit from the unique volcanic ash-enriched fertile soil that produces high-quality crops.
